Shorts for me doesn’t just mean summer, water balloon fights, and comfort; however, it also can mean writing prompts! Here are 5 story prompts and short beginnings for different genre’s of stories per my usual dice rolling style of all 51 genre types listed on google:
- Tragicomedy
Location: Dallas Texas 1963, Write a story about two boys playfully pulling pranks and having fun which end up without their knowledge killing JFK from the grassy knoll. This should resolve conflicits of conspiracy and the claim of Oswald being just a patsy.
Two friends are sitting next to each other listening to the radio.
Hey buddy, we need to celebrate the President’s visit, but what can we do? We could make spit wads, but that’s no fun… how about we go over to Oswald’s and see that he has to suggest!
The two boys go over to the store and as they enter they see a strange man in a fedora speaking the the owner. His strong hispanic accent made it hard for them to understand as he said, “Remember Lee, be in the book depository and since you’re such a terrible shot have a backup plan!”
“Welcome boy’s!” Oswald announces causing the man to leave. “What can I help you with?”
Hey, L.H. we wanted to celebrate the presidents drive through town, but we only could think of spit wads… do you have an idea of what we could do?
With a wink he said, “How about fireworks boys? In fact, you’ve inspired me and I want to give them to you as my contribution to the festivities.”

2. Fable
Write a fable that defines, “If something is too good to be true, it probably is.”
Two deer were playing in a field, a doe and a young buck. These two moved about seeking food and moving back and forth playing. The buck came across an apple tree and went to corral the young doe towards this beautiful tree. Apples were everywhere on the ground and in the tree. This bounty could last them all winter and he couldn’t believe his good fortune. As he got her attention seeking to help her share this great bounty a loud noise shocked him. Suddenly he collapsed onto his side, but he had enough consciousness as he saw the doe fleeing to see her fall at the second loud noise as the chilling hand of death took him.
3. Fictional Memoir
Write a fictional memoir of what you want people to say and write about your life.
In his life he went about failing often. This abundantly educated man spent his early life after his military service trying to learn everything he could and sought how these things could work together for good. He spent the first 30 years of his life alone, never even having a date; however, despite this causing him to make most foolish decisions his life culminated into a miraculous result…
4. Historical Romance
Write a historical romance set in Ireland during the time of St. Patrick (Maewyn Succat) preaching where a soldier who is ordered to bring him in for itinerant preaching by the Catholic authorities is conflicted over a woman he desires. This leads to his desire to know about his eternal destiny, but will he obey the authorities or follow his heart?
A man in uniform rides up the hill towards his quarry alone. Why he was asked to go alone to make this arrest he wasn’t sure, but it was only one man who was elusive of those who came in troops. How could this man wearing orange be so conniving he didn’t know, but it was his job to bring the man in.
As he came upon the group a young woman dressed in green with beautiful chestnut brown hair he saw sitting across the congregation. He thought to himself, what would it hurt to just listen a moment longer? Afterall, he’s poisoned the minds of the congregation already as much as he would.
He tied up the horse and sat among the crowd opposite from this fair lady so he could see what she would do. He was timid with women for being such a good directly spoken soldier, but who was she? For a moment their eyes met and it felt like nothing else existed in the world until he heard the words of Maewyn.
“Repent! Repent! For ye know not when the coming of the son of man is. The words of the Lord are sure words and these things are written that ye might know that ye have eternal life!”
What could the knowing of having eternal life mean?
5. Mystery
Write a story of a note left for someone that they didn’t expect. A note not given with expressed purpose, but one that leads to finding out in every way possible who left this note?
It was a day like any other in London town when Penelope found a note on her desk. It said,
Dear Penny nope,
I don’t know if you even know who I am, but you have been an encouragement to me. Your grace and honest heart shine through everything that you do. Please accept this gift with my most dear respect and admiration.
S.
Inside the box was a valuable gem set in a broach. Who could this S be? One thing was for sure. They were right that she didn’t know who this was from! Penny nope was something only uncle Claudius called her and she hated the nickname, so first thing would be to ask him…
