Mundy’s Insightful Monday’s: Mark 11:7

As I have decided to begin doing dice rolled short devotionals on Monday’s today’s dice rolled verse is Mark 11:7,

“And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him.”

Here we have a symbolism in prophecy that not everyone would understand at first unless you understand the spirit of the law.

  1. Why a colt?

The obvious answer is to fulfill prophecy…

Zechariah 9:9

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”

Genesis 49:11

“Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass’s colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes:”

Yet even as our bodies are built to have everything with multiple uses God made his word to be the same way. He came in humbly, but declared to everyone in Jerusalem not that he was the vine he claimed to be. He used this to show that he was the vine that

John 15:1

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.”

Jesus didn’t simply claim what he was, but he took the same action to match those things. He claimed to be the vine and the triumphal entry into Jerusalem showed him to be that vine to everyone that day. This is why blindness in part has happened to Israel, because they brought it upon themselves by rejecting the Lord of glory who they recognized for his actions. Herein they fulfilled another prophecy of Jeremiah…

Jeremiah 2:21

“Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?”

The choice of Israel after this point shows the prophecied rejection of the Messiah. The fact that they turned away from the Lord of Glory, and they will turn towards the anti-christ when he comes. This doesn’t have to be for the individuals, but as a nation the apple of God’s eye will wound him.

2. Why are they casting garments?

This is the biggest question I used to ask about Palm Sunday is why are they casting their garments upon him? What is the significance? I mean at least were not talking about the naked disciple today, but there is great significance to why the people were casting their garments at jesus feet.

  • Garment’s symbolize personal righteousness.

Leviticus 19:19

“Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.”

Mixing of things like woll and linen are symbols of combining works and faith as the wool is that of Abel’s offering and the Linen that of Cain’s. The wool is a picture of grace through faith without works, and linen that of work’s of righteousness without faith. What we often ignore is that combining things like philosophies and other religious ideas with the Word of God makes all of it worthless. This is a picture of combining religion and philosophies, which is why you can’t combine love for the world with love of God. A pure garment symbolizes your righteousness.

  • Garment’s also are a covering and concealment

This one does go all the way back to Adam and Eve after the fall when they covered themselves with aprons of fig leaves and God sacrificed an animal to give them a covering. Even the claim of Malachi describes the treachery that was hidden behind guises and facades within marriage.

Malachi 2:16

“For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.”

Over the courseof history clothing has been a covering in many ways. I even thought of the story of Eglon the very fat ruler and Ehud in Judges 3. Being left handed Ehud was able to use his left hand dominance to bypass security and kill an evil king. Although you have to be impressed when 3 feet and 8 inches of sword can go inside a man and people still just think that he is sleeping.

Psalms 73:6

“Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.”

The sybolism for the children of Israel welcoming Christ into the city was proclaiming that they were willing to be exposed to him. The people were metaphorically expressing the sentiment of David in Psalm 139.

Psalms 139:23

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:”

3. Why is sitting significant?

Sitting is a position of power and superiority. When God who always is in a superior position stands it’s only to plead and to judge the people according to Isaiah 3:13, but at the white throne judgment he is seated. He is even seated for the judgment seat of Christ. This means that the judgment and pleading for which he stands is here in this life. That’s why Jesus was standing at the right hand of the father in Acts 7:55.

The fact is God doesn’t do things the way we would. He enters humbly first and then he is praised and finally he shows his power. That’s why the triumphal entry isn’t just a simple showing of the messiah and Israel’s responsibility in their cutting off of the messiah.

Here Christianity has a Humble, Honored Heavenly father. Somehow we sometimes act like his opinion doesn’t matter in our lives that he bought or what goes on in his house. One day the Lion of the Tribe of Judah is coming back and he will take account. Don’t live like God doesn’t matter, doesn’t have an opinion, and doesn’t know what’s best or you will regret it. Even if you think you found his will based upon your experience you had better check it with was already revealed to you. If it conflicts then it’s wrong.
